Migrant Education Programs Serve 7,000
More than 7,000 children of
migrant farm workers are
served by two RCOE programs.
The Migrant Head Start (MHS)
program serves children ages six
weeks to five years in five centers
and child care providers
located in the agricultural
Coachella, Imperial, and Palo
Verde Valleys. These MHS centers
promote school readiness
by building and enhancing reading
and social skills. Provision is
made for health, nutritional, and
other services based upon the
needs of each family. The
Migrant Education program provides
direct supplemental educational
services to children
(three to 21 years).
These services support the
educational programs provided
by local school districts in
Riverside County. Special programs
and activities, such as
Migrant Education Even Start
(MEES), a preschool family literacy
program, and Riverside First
5 enable children to be ready
for school. Another program,
Pursuit of Awareness through
College Experience (PACE), provides
opportunities for migrant
students to envision and attain
academic success and to earn
college entrance.
