Bruce Dennis appointed to Riverside County Board of Education

The Riverside County Board of Education on Wednesday (June 15, 2011) voted to appoint Bruce Dennis, a former Nuview Union School District trustee, to fill a vacancy created by the retirement of longtime Board Member Betty Gibbel.

Gibbel, who has served on the Board for 35 years and is retiring effective July 1, represents Trustee Area 4, serving the Perris Union, Perris Elementary, Val Verde Unified, Hemet Unified, San Jacinto Unified, Menifee Union, Romoland and Nuview Union school districts.

The Board voted in May to appoint a replacement for Gibbel to save the cost of a special election, estimated to cost $328,000. Dennis will begin his term in July and hold office until the June 2012 election.

The Riverside County Board of Education has seven members who serve four-year terms. The Board approves curriculum for schools operated by the Riverside County Office of Education and the budget, hears appeals for interdistrict transfers, expulsions and charter school applications, and sets the salary for the Riverside County Superintendent of Schools.

Dennis, 52, is a Postmaster for the city of Walnut. He served on the Nuview Union School District Board of Trustees from 1995 to 2008, served as Federal Government Chair of the National School Boards Association, Board of Directors of the Riverside County School Boards Association, and Delegate Assembly, California School Boards Association. He was a member of Rotary and was named a Paul Harris Fellow in Rotary International.

He and his wife Robin live in Nuevo and have a daughter, Sarah, a professor at Palomar Community College.

“I absolutely look forward to serving the children of Riverside County, and being an advocate for them,” he said after being notified of the appointment.

Dennis was one of seven applicants for the vacancy. The others included: Michael Fred Allen, retired, San Jacinto; William “Bill” Gould, business owner, Menifee; Scott A. Mann, business owner and former Menifee City Council Member, Menifee; Thomas J. Murray, business CEO, Menifee; Patrick C. Searl, self-employed businessman, Hemet; and Kenneth R. Woytek, retired plant manager, Menifee.
