AVID Write-Off regional winners to be honored

Six winners from Riverside County were honored at the 12th annual Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Write-Off Ceremony on March 24 at the University of Redlands Chapel.

Students in grades 6-12 from AVID programs in Riverside, Inyo, Mono and San Bernardino (RIMS) counties participated in this year’s competition, a timed-essay writing contest that is modeled after the University of California’s Analytical Writing Exam. Each of the 123 middle and high school sites submitted one entry per grade level (568 total entries).

The following students were recognized as regional winners:

12th-grade: Sean Braswell of Vista Murrieta High School;

10th-grade: David Acosta of La Sierra High School in Riverside;

9th-grade: Matthew Lumantas of Lakeside High School in Lake Elsinore;

8th-grade: Julia Rivera of Menifee Valley Middle School;

7th-grade: Elias Mauud of Landmark Middle School in Moreno Valley;

6th-grade: Rose Schweis of Terra Cotta Middle School in Lake Elsinore.

The featured speaker at the Write-Off ceremony will be California poet, Juan Delgado author of “El Campo” (1998).
