County Superintendent honors top academic achievers
Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Kenneth M. Young named 10 outstanding students to the 2010-11 All-County Academic Team Wednesday (March 16, 2011) during the Sixth Annual Riverside County Student Academic Awards dinner (photos from awards dinner).
Forty-nine high schools in the county nominated 132 students for honors based on their academic performance, GPA, college entrance exam scores, and extracurricular activities. Each high school named from one to three students based on their enrollment. The All-County Academic Team was chosen from that list (complete list of students honored).
The members of the All-County Academic Team were accompanied by their principals and superintendents. The team includes:
Julia Bu – Julia Bu is a senior at John W. North High School in the Riverside Unified School District. Julia is ranked third in her class and has a GPA of 4.66. Julia’s activities and honors include: National AP Scholar, National Merit Semifinalist, intern at UC Riverside, coauthored an article Urothermal Synthesis of Crystalline Porous Materials published in the applied chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie, three year varsity member of the tennis team, volunteer for the Riverside Community Hospital where she was recognized for over 100 hours of service, California Girls’ State Delegate, French Honor Society President, and Red Cross Club President. She scored a 2,300 on the SAT.
Hongyu Chen – Hongyu Chen is a senior at John W. North High School in the Riverside Unified School District. Hongyu is ranked first in his class and has a GPA of 4.67. Hongyu’s activities and honors include: classical pianist for 13 years, received the equivalent of a Bachelor’s of Music from the Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Toronto, President of the chess club, founder and President of the chess club at UC Riverside Family Housing, computer programmer, semifinalist at the Facebook Hacker Cup, Riverside County Regional Medical Center volunteer (over 500 hours), AP Ambassador, leader in the Interact Club, member of the Academic Decathlon, President of the Math Club, Polaris Literary Magazine editor-in-chief, art club vice President, and Spanish to English translator of toy manuals. He scored a 35 on the ACT.
Richard Dama – Richard Dama is a senior at John W. North High School in the Riverside Unified School District. Richard is ranked first in his class and has a GPA of 4.67. Richard’s activities and honors include: Academic Decathlon team captain, leader in the Interact Club, Science Honor Society Vice President and tutor, California Scholarship Federation Vice President and tutor, AP Ambassador, AP Scholar with Distinction, Questbridge Finalist, and Speech and Debate National Forensic League member. He scored a 2,280 on the SAT.
Sunil Deolalikar – Sunil Deolalikar is a senior at Poly High School in the Riverside Unified School District. Sunil is ranked first in his class and has a GPA of 4.75. Sunil’s activities and honors include: summer research intern at the National Institutes of Health Laboratory of Malaria and Vector Research in Washington DC, volunteer intern at the UC Riverside Insect Immunity and Vector Biology Lab and the Biomedical Sciences Lab, founder and tutor of the chess club at Riverside Main Library, founder and tutor of the chess club at Riverside Orange Terrace Library, volunteer at Loma Linda Children’s Hospital, National Merit Semifinalist, National AP Scholar, California State History Day finalist, and Rensselaer Medalist. He scored a 2,280 on the SAT.
Joann Park – Joann Park is a senior at Centennial High School in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. Joann is ranked first in her class and has a GPA of 4.8. Joann’s activities and honors include: President of the Future Business Leaders of America, Vice President and cofounder of the Model United Nations, President of the California Scholarship Federation, Junior Statesman of America member, Historian of the Centennial Asian Pacific Student Union, Fashion Club President, and member of the Red Cross. She scored a 2,230 on the SAT.
Lakshmi Prathivadi – Lakshmi Prathivadi is a senior at Great Oak High School in the Temecula Valley Unified School District. Lakshmi is ranked first in her class and has a GPA of 4.74. Lakshmi’s activities and honors include: National Honor Society Secretary, Biology Club President, Science Olympiad Co-President, Academic Decathlon Co-President, Math Club Treasurer, peer tutor, and Indian vocal classical musician. She is an author who has completed a novel manuscript and is awaiting a response from a publisher. She scored a 2,240 on the SAT.
Yang Wang – Yang Wang is a senior at Santiago High School in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. Yang is ranked first in his class and has a GPA of 4.75. Yang’s activities and honors include: Philosophy Club librarian, Junior State of America Secretary, Corona Public Library volunteer, Mock Trial Secretary, Key Club member, National Honor Society member, City of Corona volunteer, Pacific-Asian Club member, Future Business Leaders of America member, Rose Parade volunteer, and Homeless Shelter volunteer. He scored a 2,340 on the SAT.
Robert Wickham – Robert Wickham is a senior at Palm Springs High School in the Palm Springs Unified School District. Robert is ranked first in his class and has a GPA of 4.69. Robert’s activities and honors include: AP Scholar with Distinction, National Merit Commended Student, California Golden Boys’ State Delegate, Principal’s Award, published in The Frigate, sweepstakes winner at district Science Fair, gold medal winner at RIMS Regional Science and Engineering Fair, Junior State of America leader, Film Club member, community service teaching children to swim, assistant life guard at swim center, member of swim team, started own web-design business, tutor, pianist, and amateur photographer. He scored a 2,220 on the SAT.
Wesley Wong – Wesley Wong is a senior at Vista Murrieta High School in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District. Wesley is ranked first in his class and has a GPA of 4.47. Wesley’s activities and honors include: varsity tennis team, pianist, President of SAT club, member of Heritage String Ensemble, winner of USTA Tennis 24th Annual Fallbrook Fall Satellite Boys 16 Single Consolation, and President of the Music Club. He scored a 2,290 on the SAT.
Addison Yang – Addison Yang is a senior at Centennial High School in the Corona-Norco Unified School District. Addison is ranked second in his class and has a GPA of 4.71. Addison’s activities and honors include: Junior State of America State Director of Debate, Secretary, Publicist, Activism Committee, and co-founder, summer intern for Taiwanese Foundation for Democracy, member of Corona Mayor’s Youth Council, Secretary and Publicist for Red Cross, AP Club Co-President, IB Student Association Mentoring Treasurer, member of Future Business Leaders of America, Mandarin teacher, and pianist. He scored a 2,300 on the SAT.
