Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Kenneth M. Young releases statement on the 2010 High School Exit Exam Report
Kenneth M. Young, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools, issued the following statement about today’s release (August 24, 2010) of the latest results for the California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE).
“We’re pleased that for the first time ever, Riverside County’s three significant subgroups -- African American, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students – have outperformed the state average in both English Language Arts and Math,” Young said. “And for the third consecutive year, the performance of all our 10th grade students, taking the exam for the first time, has improved. We’re pleased to see these continuing gains.
We’re focused on ensuring that all Riverside County students not only graduate, but graduate well-prepared for college and the workforce. These numbers show that our students and schools across the county are working hard to reach that goal.”
Young released the following Riverside County highlights from the 2010 state report data:
Measured against the rest of California’s 16 large counties, Riverside County’s year-over-year gains ranked it among the leaders: third for improvement in ELA, and fifth in math.
For a third consecutive year, performance improved on both portions of the exam for all Riverside County 10th grade students tested. Of 33,010 sophomores who took the test for the first time, 80 percent passed the CAHSEE’s English Language Arts section, and 80 percent passed the Math section.
On the English Language Arts section, that score of 80 reflects a six-point gain over the test-takers of 2004, when the CAHSEE was first offered. On the Math section, the 2010 score of 80 represented an even greater improvement – an 8-point gain over 2004 scores.
