Riverside County students
continue to improve on STAR Test
Riverside County students continue to improve in their performance on state standardized testing, according to results released this week by the State Department of Education.
At Riverside County schools, 325,731 students participated in STAR testing during the 2009-10 school year. Results of the new California Standards Tests (CSTs) showed noteworthy gains for the county’s students in all subject areas.
The improvements in Riverside County were particularly gratifying in a year when the county’s schools struggled with historic budget cuts, said Riverside County Superintendent of Schools Kenneth M. Young.
“These test scores are a result of an extraordinary continuing effort from our students, teachers and schools, and supportive parents as well,” said Young. “Collectively they are helping our students to reach higher levels of academic achievement in Riverside County, and these numbers are a testament to that.
“We’re anxious to see the rest of the results that are due out soon,” Young added. “We’re confident they will demonstrate that our county’s public education system is really focused on helping all our students reach their potential.”
Highlights for Riverside County schools in the state report:
• More than half (51 percent) of students in grades two through eleven scored at the proficient or advanced level in English language arts, an increase of 3 percentage points from 2009 to 2010.
• Fifty-nine percent of Riverside County students in grades 2 through 7 scored at the proficient or advanced level in mathematics, also an increase of 3 percentage points from 2009 to 2010.
• Forty-five percent of students in grades two through eleven scored at the proficient or advanced level in mathematics, a 2-percent increase over last year.
• The percentages of students who scored at the proficient or advanced level increased by 7 percentage points on NCLB science tests (grades 5, 8 and 10), 5 percentage points on End-of-Course Science tests and 3 percentage points on History-Social Science tests.
The state’s STAR standardized testing consists of four major components, California Standards Tests (CSTs), California Alternate Performance Assessment (CAPA), California Modified Assessment (CMA) and Standards-based Tests in Spanish (STS).
The CAHSEE, or state graduation test, and the API and AYP results, associated with the federal No Child Left Behind Act, will be released by the state later this month.
