Four Riverside County schools recognized for outstanding college preparation programs

Four Riverside County schools have been recognized by the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) Center, the national organization behind the successful middle and high school college readiness program, for their exceptional college going rates among AVID students.

The schools are:

West Valley High School, Hemet USD - 100% acceptance into four-year college

Elsinore High School, Lake Elsinore USD - 95.1% acceptance into four-year college

Ramona High School, Riverside USD - 99% acceptance into four-year college

Moreno Valley High School, Moreno Valley USD - 90.5% acceptance into four-year college

These AVID schools serve as models for their districts and the state, said Kenneth M. Young, Riverside County Superintendent of Schools. They are training grounds for AVID teachers and provide the action research needed for successful secondary programs. We are very proud of their recognition at the national level.

The schools were selected when Secretary of Education Arne Duncan requested a list of the top 18 AVID programs in the nation.

According to the AVID Center website AVID is a college-readiness system designed to increase the number of students who enroll in four-year colleges. Although AVID serves all students, it focuses on the least served students in the academic middle. The formula is simple - raise expectations of students and, with the AVID support system in place, they will rise to the challenge.
